What the game sends
- A "still playing" ping every minute while the game is open: what you are doing (menu, solo, hosting, joining, daily challenge, tutorial), the game version, the language and the system (Windows, Linux, Steam Deck).
- A summary of your runs, in chunks (every 5 minutes, when you leave a run and when you close the game): mode, outcome, difficulty, ECHO+ level, biome, where you fell, play time, kills, shots, dashes, damage dealt and taken, weapon and party size.
- Whether you finished, skipped or left the tutorial.
- A random code for your install, created on first use, to count unique players.
- On Steam, a Steam session ticket so our server can confirm with Steam that this is a real copy of the game. Our server sees your SteamID only during that check and does not store it — only an irreversible hash (SHA-256 with a secret salt).
What is never sent or stored
- Your name, your SteamID, your friends, room codes, your IP address (used only for a moment to rate-limit requests, never stored) or any file on your computer.
- Crash reports are only sent if you press SEND on the crash screen (they go to Sentry and contain the error, the game version, your system and graphics card — no name).
How to turn it off
- Options > Game > Anonymous stats. The game shows a notice on the main menu the first time you open it.
Where it is kept
- On our server (DigitalOcean, New York): totals, a daily summary (120 days), 5-minute samples (7 days) and the run summaries of each month. Only the developers can see them. This website loads nothing from third parties and sets no cookies.
Contact
- Questions or a request to delete your data (send us your install code, shown in the game's save folder): contact@dontdescend.com.
